Arezzo: A splendid city set on a hilltop in eastern Tuscany, beneath the Tosco-Romagnolo Apennines. As its architecture illustrates, it was one of the major Etruscan cities, and later a strategic Roman city. The birthplace of Francesco Petrarca, Giorgio Vasari and Pietro Aretino, it is rich in works of art; Piero della Francesca painted the extraordinary cycle of the "Legend of the true Cross" in the Basilica of San Francesco and there is a splendid Crucifix by Cimabue in the church of San Domenico. Every Sunday of the month, and the preceding day, the Antiques Fair is held in Piazza Grande and the surronding streets, and the "Giostra del Saracino" takes place every year in June and September.
